As discussed in my previous blog on simple prepositions, compound prepositions or les prépositions composées are a combination of two or more simple prepositions. In today’s article, let’s learn compound prepositions in French.
1. Près de= Near to
– Il y a un parc près de chez lui. (There’s a park near his house.)
– Mon livre est près de la télévision. (My book is near the television.)
– Son bureau est près de mon école. (His office is near my school.)
2. Loin de= far from
– Il y a un centre commercial loin de chez moi. (There’s a mall far from my house.)
– J’habite loin de mon bureau. (I live far from my office.)
3. Lors de= During
– J’étudie beaucoup lors de mes vacances. (I study a lot during my vacation.)
– Il y a quatre épreuves à passer lors de cet examen. (There are 4 modules to appear for during this exam.)
4. À côté de= beside/ next to
– Il y a un jardin à côté de cet hôtel. (There’s a garden next to this hotel.)
– Il y a un hôpital à côté de la pharmacie. (There’s a hospital next to the pharmacy.)
– Il y a une église à côté de cette école. (There is a church next to this school.)
– Je m’assois à côté de mon meilleur ami. (I sit next to my best friend.)
5. À cause de= due to/ because of (to depict a negative consequence)
– Je suis en retard à cause de la pluie. (I am late due to the rain.)
– Je n’ai pas fait mes devoirs à cause de ma maladie. (I didn’t do my homework because of my illness.)
– Je n’ai pas assisté au cours à cause de mon travail. (I did not attend the course because of my work.)
6. Grâce à= because of/ thanks to (to depict a positive consequence)
– Je parle bien le français grâce à mon professeur. (I speak French well thanks to my teacher.)
– Je cuisine bien des plats indiens grâce à ma mère. (I cook Indian dishes well thanks to my mother.)
– Je suis arrivé à l’heure grâce à moins de circulation. (I arrived on time thanks to less traffic.)
– J’ai voyagé en France grâce à l’aide de mes parents. (I traveled to France thanks to my parents’ help.)
7. En dépit de= Despite
– En dépit de tous mes efforts, il ne réalise pas. (Despite all my efforts, he is not realizing.)
– En dépit du mauvais temps, je suis allé à l’école. (Despite the bad weather, I went to school.)
8. Compte tenu de= Considering/ Taking into account/ Taking into consideration
– Compte tenu du confinement, nous allons prolonger votre contrat du travail en ligne avec l’entreprise. (Considering the lockdown, we are going to extend your employment contract online with the company.)
– Compte tenu de mon bon travail, mon patron a recommandé une promotion pour moi. (Considering my good work, my boss recommended a promotion for me.)
9. En bas= downstairs
– Attends, j’arrive en bas. (Wait, I am coming downstairs.)
– Il y a un inconnu en bas. (There’s a stranger downstairs.)
10. En haut= upstairs
– J’arrive en haut. (I am coming upstairs.)
– Il vous attend en haut, ouvrez la porte s’il vous plaît. (He’s waiting for you upstairs, open the door please.)
11. En dehors (de)/ À l’extérieur (de)= outside (of)
– Il y a un chien en dehors de ma chambre. (There is a dog outside my room.)
– Tu cherches ton sac à main à l’extérieur de cette chambre. (You’re searching for your bag outside this room.)
12. À l’intérieur (de)= Inside
– Tu cherches ton sac à main à l’intérieur de cette chambre. (You’re searching for your bag inside this room.)
– Il y a un canapé à l’intérieur de la bibliothèque. (There’s a couch inside the library.)
13. À propos de/ au sujet de/ concernant/ à l’égard de= Regarding/ Concerning
– Je vais discuter avec vous au sujet de la pollution. (I will discuss pollution with you.)
– C’est à propos de toi. (It’s regarding you.)
– Elle va discuter avec son ami au sujet de ce projet. (She is going to discuss with her friend about this project.)
14. Par rapport à= compared to/ in comparison to/ in relation to
– J’ai des avantages à habiter ici par rapport à mes voisins. (I have some advantages living here as compared to my neighbors.)
– Habitue-toi à penser que la mort n’est rien par rapport à nous. (Get used to thinking that death is nothing compared to us.)
15. À travers/ autour de= across/ around
– Je veux voyager à travers le monde. (I want to travel across the world.)
– Je veux voyager autour du monde. (I want to travel around the world.)
– On va discuter beaucoup d’aspects autour de ce sujet. (We will discuss many aspects around this subject.)
16. À gauche (de)= to the left (of)
– Il y a un parc à gauche de ma maison. (There is a park to the left of my house.)
17. À droite (de)= to the right (of)
– Tournez à droite au rond-point. (Turn right at the roundabout.)
18. Au milieu (de)= in the middle (of)
– Il y a une mare au milieu du parc. (There’s a pond in the middle of the park.)
19. Tout droit= Straight ahead
– Elle va tout droit. (She is going straight ahead.)
– Allez tout droit. (Go straight ahead.)
20. Au- dessous= beneath/ under (for a physical space)
21. Au- dessus= above (for a physical space)
22. Ci- dessous= below (for written texts)
23. Ci- dessus= above (for written texts)
POINTS TO REMEMBER:
– “Au-dessus” is like something just above a physical space.
– “Ci-dessus” is used in a text when there is a link to an article for example, and the text says: “J’ajoute le lien de l’article ci-dessus.” (I am adding the link to the article on top.)
– “Ci-dessous” comes when something is placed at the end of a text or right after the phrase containing “ci-dessous”.
– “Ci-dessus” and “ci-dessous” are formal terms that refer to a text written above or below.
– “Au-dessus” and “au-dessous” are common terms for something located above or below something else.
Par exemple,
A. Ci-dessous, le lien du site Internet.” (Below is given the link for the website.)
B. Ma chambre est située au-dessus du restaurant. (My room is situated above the restaurant.)
