Preparing for TEF Canada Writing can feel overwhelming because many students try to memorize entire essays and too many complex expressions. In reality, success in the writing module comes from having a clear structure, using a few reliable sentence patterns, and knowing how to organize your ideas effectively. In this guide, you’ll find a simplified approach to both Section A and Section B, designed to help you write confidently without feeling lost or overloaded with information. 

SECTION A

Continue a News Story

Task: You receive the beginning of a newspaper article and must imagine what happened next.

Word limit: 80-120 words

Suggested time: 25 minutes

What Does the Examiner Evaluate?

  • Coherence

  • Vocabulary
  • Organization of ideas

Step 1: Answer These Questions First

Before writing, quickly ask yourself:

Who?: Who is involved?

What?: What happened?

Where?: Where did the event take place?

Why?: Why did it happen?

What happened afterwards?: How did the situation end?

Recommended Structure

Paragraph 1: Explain the main event.

Example: Lundi dernier, une jeune femme a oublié son portefeuille dans un train.

Paragraph 2: Explain what happened next.

Example: Elle s’est rendu compte de son oubli quelques minutes plus tard et a contacté la gare.

Paragraph 3: Mention reactions and consequences.

Example: Heureusement, un autre passager avait remis le portefeuille au personnel.

Tenses to Use

  • Passé composé- For describing main actions

Keep the story realistic: Simple stories with correct grammar score better than complicated stories with many mistakes.

Express Your Opinion

Task: Write a formal letter reacting to an article.

Word limit: 200 words

Time allowed: 35 minutes

Recommended Structure

Introduction: Mention the article, the reason why you are writing, and state your opinion.
