One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is believing that they should understand native French speakers from day one.
When we start learning French, we are still building basic vocabulary, learning sentence structures, and trying to understand how the language works. Then someone advises us to listen to native French content, and suddenly we find ourselves listening to people who speak quickly, use unfamiliar expressions, and seem impossible to follow.
The result?
Many learners start questioning themselves:
“Am I not good at languages?”
“Why can’t I understand anything?”
“Will I ever become fluent?”
The truth is that native speakers are fluent for the same reason we are fluent in our own language: they have been surrounded by it for years. Comparing your Day 1 to their years of experience is unfair to yourself.
Not understanding everything is COMPLETELY NORMAL.
In fact, it is part of the learning process.
Instead of listening to native French with the goal of understanding every word, try listening with curiosity. Pay attention to how they pronounce words, how they express emotions, and how conversations flow naturally.
Then listen to the same audio again with subtitles.
You’ll be surprised by how much more you notice the second time.
Another helpful tip is to choose content that genuinely interests you. Whether it’s history, culture, food, travel, sports, fashion, or current events, learning becomes much easier when you’re curious about the topic.
French should not feel like an exam every day. Sometimes, it should simply feel like discovering something new.
Language learning requires patience, consistency, and a willingness to stay uncomfortable for a while. Progress is often happening even when it doesn’t feel like it.
At LingoRelic, we help learners go beyond memorising vocabulary and grammar. We focus on building strong foundations, understanding exam expectations, developing effective strategies, and most importantly, creating the confidence needed to use French in real-life situations. If you need our help, you know where to reach us!
Be patient with yourself. Every fluent speaker was once a beginner. Share this with a fellow French learner who might be feeling discouraged today.
