Let’s face it, when students hear “le conditionnel,” most of them freak out.
But honestly? It’s not that deep.
You don’t need to learn 50 rules or memorize huge lists to get started.
Just a few basic structures, some practice, and boom! You’re already using it!
So, what is the conditionnel?
It’s just the French way of saying things like:
- I would go
- You would choose
- We would help
It’s used to talk about imaginary stuff, give advice, or sound polite.
So how do we form it?
It’s super chill:
Infinitive verb (or special stem) + imparfait endings
(-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient)
Par exemple,
- je parlerais = I would speak
- il finirait = he would finish
- nous irions = we would go
- elles feraient = they would do
You don’t have to remember every verb on Day 1. Just start using a few!
Please don’t wait to be “perfect”
Here’s my honest take:
You can totally use le conditionnel even if your grammar isn’t perfect yet.
Start with a few phrases. Make mistakes. Keep going.
That’s how you actually learn.
Some examples: let’s connect this with global themes
You’ll see the conditionnel a LOT in topics like climate, tech, or health. Let me show you how.
Climate & Environment
(People would recycle more if they understood the consequences.)
(Governments should invest in green energy.)
Health & Lifestyle
- On vivrait mieux si on mangeait moins de malbouffe.
(We’d live better if we ate less junk food.)
- (Hospitals could save more lives with more resources.)
Tech & Social Media
(I’d spend less time on my phone if I had a good book.) - Les jeunes seraient plus concentrés sans TikTok.
(Young people would be more focused without TikTok.)
Simple Starters to Practice With
If you’re still feeling unsure, start with one of these formulas:
- Je voudrais… → I would like…
(Je voudrais voyager dans le monde entier.)
- Si j’avais le choix, je… → If I had the choice, I would…
- On pourrait… → We could…
Finally,
Don’t wait till you’ve “mastered” it.
- Use it with mistakes.
Practice out loud.
Reuse 2 to 3 structures until they feel natural.
That’s how you’ll stop overthinking it.
